There is much debate about sunglasses with yellow lenses for use as night driving glasses with many “experts” claiming that they offer no benefit at all. We get many enquiries from customers looking for yellow tinted glasses to use for night driving and it seems that they will use them whatever the experts say, however not all yellow lenses are the same. Legally in the UK and Europe, lenses with light transmission of less than 75% should not be used for night driving. According to EN 1836:2005, the British and European Standard for Sunglasses, Section E.2 Reduced Light: Sunglare filters with a luminous transmittance of less than 75 % are not suitable for use in twilight or at night. This means that all sunglasses classified as UV filter category 0 (80% to 100% light transmission) can be legally used for night driving. But only some those in UV filter category 1 (43% to 80% light transmission) are suitable. Beware, many yellow lenses transmit much less than 75% of light, these would be both dangerous and illegal for use at night. All the products listed in this section have light transmission properties of greater than 75% and so can be legally used as night driving glasses. The carefully selected lens tints also pass the traffic signal recognition tests for the critical driving colours of red, amber and green.
Yellow lenses enhance contrast and depth perception by filtering scattered, out-of-focus blue light. This won’t give you the ability to see in the dark but will reduce the contrast between the bright lights of cars and the surrounding darkness. Anti-reflective (AR) coatings on the back of a lens allow light to pass more freely through it, approximately 99% of available light will pass through the lens thus reducing glare considerably. This helps to reduce eye fatigue in many situations, particularly whilst driving at night. Light that comes from the sides and behind causes additional glare due to reflections off the backs of the lenses, the AR coating also reduces these reflections. Polarised lenses filter direct light and eliminate glare reflected off flat surfaces allowing the wearer to see light in its pure state. Objects appear more defined, sharper and naturally coloured. They increase visual acuity whilst enhancing visual performance which improves the contrast and sharpness in your vision.
